Checkered Flag Hyundai announces that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2010 Hyundai Tucson a “Top Safety Pick” designation for achieving the highest possible rating of “Good” in all crash test categories.
Vehicles were judged as “Good” had to pass a frontal offset crash test, side impact test, rear crash protection/head restraint rating and rollover roof strength test. To pass the roof strength testing, vehicles had to withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle’s weight. The current federal standard is 1.5 times weight.
As a final consideration, an IIHS “Top Safety Pick,” vehicles must also feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC)—a safety feature that has been standard on Tucson since the fall of 2004. This year, Hyundai has continued to improve the safety package on the Tucson, debuting new standard technologies such as Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC).
Checkered Flag Hyundai offers both the GLS and Limited trim levels. The GLS comes standard with steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt steering wheel and a six-speaker CD stereo with an iPod/USB interface. To this list of features, the Limited trim adds alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a tilt-and-telescoping multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and Bluetooth.

“The Tucson was the first vehicle in our lineup that so artfully combined state-of-the-art safety features, design and affordability,” said Mike Nino, Tucson’s Product Planning Manager. “The IIHS Top Safety Pick confirms what we’ve known all along—that the Tucson is an attractive CUV and both a safety and value leader in the market.”
